January greenery

Given the mild weather we've had the last 2 or 3 months (ignoring the 3 days of freezing temps just last week) it's not surprising that some crops are much further on they they usually would be this time of year. The Aquadulce Claudia and Sutton broad beans, which were sown in late October germinated rather rapidly. Usually they get a bit of a growth check in Dec/Jan with a freezy spell and occasionally a blanket of snow. But not this year, at least not yet. These photos were taken in early Jan - some of the bean plants are already 40-50cm tall and flopping about. I really need to get out and create my usual 'boxing ring' style support with twine and pruned branches from elsewhere in the garden. I'll just add that to my to-do list...

  1. I'm growing broad beans for the first time this year. I hated them when I was a child, but I thought it about time that I gave them a second chance. You never know, I might love them if I grow them myself.

  2. Ah the broad bean of perfection. I am growing vegetables only in spirit as am in mid clearance and creation. Welcome to Blotanical. AKA Catharine Howard Gardens PS tell Jo above that she can pack up her bbean crop and send it to me if she finds she hates them still

  3. Love that bottom picture! The blue and green look so fresh together. I wish I'd grown some beans in the autumn - I'm not convinced that I actually like broad beans but have my eye on some nice pink ones for this year. It must be lovely to have new veg growing at this time ...

  4. I put mine in at the same time as you, they looked wonderful until freezing temperatures shrivelled them to a pulp, along came 5 inches of snow to bury them for me.

Oh well, I can always try again!
